Question 1

What exactly is Robusta, and how is it different from Arabica? I’m not a fan of sour coffee, so would Robusta be a good choice for a beginner like me?

Accepted Answer

Robusta and Arabica are two main types of coffee beans.

- **Arabica** is usually smoother and more aromatic. It can taste fruity or bright—sometimes “sour” if it is lightly roasted or brewed in a way that brings out acidity.
- **Robusta** is stronger, more bitter, and has more caffeine. Think of the difference between dark chocolate and milk chocolate: Robusta is often more intense, earthy, and punchy.

If you dislike sour coffee, Robusta *can* be a reasonable choice, especially in espresso or coffee with milk. However, it is not automatically better: some Robusta can taste quite bitter or rough.

For a beginner, the simplest route is usually:
1. Choose a **medium or darker roast** rather than a light roast.
2. Look for words like **sweet, caramel, chocolate, nuts, or mellow**.
3. Avoid coffees described mainly as citrusy, berry-like, or very bright.

You do not have to choose Robusta to avoid sourness. A medium-roasted Arabica blend can be sweet and easy to drink too. Among the coffees in this context, **KASHIWA CAFE 珈茶話’s カシワブレンド** is described as sweet and medium roasted, so it may be a gentler starting point than a very light-roasted coffee.

Question 2

How do Robusta and Liberica differ in flavor and body? I’m curious whether either could fit my preference for bright, fruit-forward coffees.

Accepted Answer

Robusta and Liberica generally sit quite far from the bright, fruit-forward profile you’re looking for.

- **Robusta** tends to be fuller-bodied, more bitter, and more earthy or woody, often with dark chocolate, nutty, and sometimes rubbery notes. It can add a heavy crema and punchy texture, but it rarely delivers the clean, sparkling acidity associated with fruit-forward specialty Arabica.
- **Liberica** is often more unusual and aromatic: think woody, smoky, jackfruit-like, floral, or spice-like character. Its body can feel syrupy or substantial, but the fruit impression is typically tropical and exotic rather than crisp berry, citrus, or stone-fruit acidity.

If you enjoy **bright, clean fruit**, neither would be the most direct match. The **Kenya Specialty** from 常盤珈琲焙煎所 赤羽店 is likely the closer fit: it is a light-roasted, washed Kenyan coffee, a processing and roast style commonly associated with clearer acidity and a more vivid cup than Robusta or Liberica.

If you prefer fruit with more sweetness and a rounder body rather than sharp brightness, the washed Guatemalan Catuai and Bourbon from Stockfleths may also be worth trying. Its listed notes of **plum, caramel, and dried fruit** suggest a sweeter, more mellow fruit profile.

Question 3

How does a natural-process SL28 compare to a washed SL34 in terms of acidity, fruit character, and structure?

Accepted Answer

A direct comparison is inherently confounded: you are changing both cultivar (SL28 vs. SL34) and process (natural vs. washed). Processing will usually account for more of the cup-style difference than the SL28/SL34 distinction alone.

- **Acidity:** A natural-process SL28 often presents acidity as broader, riper, and more integrated—think jammy berry or wine-like impressions rather than sharply delineated citrus. A washed SL34 is more likely to show cleaner, more explicit acidity, with a firmer, more linear structure. SL28 can have striking acidity when washed, but natural processing may soften its apparent precision.

- **Fruit character:** Natural SL28 commonly emphasizes fermented or dried-fruit character: berry compote, tropical fruit, grape, and sometimes boozy notes if fermentation is pronounced. Washed SL34 generally expresses fruit with greater separation and transparency—often cleaner stone-fruit, citrus, or blackcurrant-like notes, depending on origin and roast.

- **Structure and body:** The natural SL28 will typically feel fuller, rounder, and more syrupy, with a lingering sweet finish and potentially heavier fermentation-derived texture. The washed SL34 should tend toward a cleaner palate, more defined sweetness, lighter-to-medium body, and a more orderly finish. Its structure may feel more tea-like or crystalline rather than plush.

For a meaningful varietal comparison, the best control would be SL28 and SL34 from the same region, harvest, producer, roast profile, and processing method. Without those controls, it is more accurate to describe this as a **natural-versus-washed comparison with cultivar influence**, not a pure SL28-versus-SL34 comparison.

Question 4

How does the natural process usually show up in the cup? I’ve heard it can taste fruitier, but I’m not sure how to describe that in a review.

Accepted Answer

Natural-process coffees often present fruit in a more ripe, jammy, or wine-like way than washed coffees. In a review, you might describe notes such as berry, tropical fruit, dried fruit, fermented fruit, or a syrupy sweetness. The body can also feel fuller and the acidity softer or more rounded.

By contrast, a washed coffee often tastes cleaner and more clearly structured: the fruit may come across as crisp plum, citrus, or apple rather than jam or fruit liqueur.

A useful review structure could be:

> “The cup had a ripe, dried-fruit sweetness with a fuller, syrupy body. The fruit character felt more jammy than crisp, with a lingering sweet finish.”

If you enjoy the plum, caramel, and dried-fruit profile of the Guatemala from Stockfleths, you may also appreciate a natural coffee—especially one where the fruit is more pronounced and winey.

Question 5

Show only comparable facts.

Accepted Answer

Robusta and Liberica are unstated. the Guatemala coffee handled by Stockfleths explicitly lists varieties, washed process, and medium roast.
